FAQs

Where is Onyx and Elm located?

Our home is Melbourne, Australia but we source and ship jewels all over the world.

What can I expect when purchasing a vintage or antique item?

Genuine antique and vintage jewellery has been worn and loved, but like all antique jewellery enthusiasts, we believe this only adds to the charm. Most items display patina, signs of age and other individual attributes, none of which are considered faults. We aim to provide honest and thorough information on all items, to the best of our ability. Please look carefully at listing images as these form part of the description, and don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have before buying.

Occasionally we may have new or reproduction pieces available - these items will be described as such.

Do you offer ring resizing?

We encourage customers to undertake resizing or modifications with their personal jeweller. However, if you prefer to organise resizing at the time of purchase, we can also do this on your behalf. We have a trusted jeweller who does high quality work at a reasonable price. Please contact us prior to purchase to receive a quote for the extra cost of resizing. Please note that items that are resized or modified to meet individual customer needs are considered final sales and are not available for return.

How do I care for vintage and antique jewellery?

Like all jewellery, vintage and antique pieces should be treated with care. Jewellery that features foil-backed gems, turquoise, pearls, opals or Essex crystal can be particularly prone to damage and should not be exposed to liquids. Gems can also be harmed by impact, so should not be worn for more robust activities.

Should you wish to clean your jewellery, it's always best to seek advice from a professional. Gentle scrubbing with warm water and a drop of dish washing liquid can be undertaken if you're confident that the piece won't be damaged.

How are the carat weights of your gemstones measured?

Only loose gemstones can be measured accurately. For vintage and antique jewellery, gems are already in their setting so the weight can only be calculated by estimation. This is done by measuring the gem, examining its cut, and using a formula for calculation. All gemstone weights specified by us are approximate, and are described as such.

Do you gift wrap?

All our items come in an attractive black and white gift box suitable for special occasions (n.b. large or odd shaped items may require individualised packaging). If you would also like a personalised note included with a gift, please let us know.
