A beautiful and sentimental late Georgian era (1714-1836) mourning ring. The ring bears the words 'In memory of' in Gothic-style lettering around its circumference set against black enamel. The inside of the band is engraved with the message 'Anne Rebecca Tylden Pattenson, Ob Feb 11 1836 at 33'.
Through online research, I was able to find out the following details about Anne's life. She was born and lived in Kent, England. She was the daughter of landed gentry, her father an MP. She married at the age of eighteen to Lt-Col Cooke Tylden-Pattenson, and had the first of five children a year later. She died quite young - I'm unsure as to how exactly, but her headstone notes that she passed 'after a long and painful illness which she bore sustained by divine grace'. Her husband remarried to a cousin. This mourning ring was most likely worn by one of her two daughters, who were aged just 8 and 9 when she passed. I have included a photo of Anne's headstone.
The Tylden lineage can be traced back to England's middle ages and to the court of Henry II. Sir Richard Tylden accompanied Henry's son, Richard I 'The Lionheart' on the Third Crusade to conquer the Holy Land in 1190.
