An exquisite antique Victorian era (1837-1901) watch key in 18ct yellow gold. Watch keys were worn on fobs in Victorian times; kept at hand to wind timepieces. Although they were functional, they were made with fine detail and beauty, and today they make lovely pendants or charms.
This watch key is highly unusual, in that it is masquerading as a door key. The bottom section of the key’s blade retracts with a ‘click’ to reveal a watch key hidden within. The key head is formed by the coils of a serpent with the shaft gripped in its jaws, while the key bit is decorated with a scrolled design in relief. A jump ring is mounted to key's middle on a rotating bale.
No stamps are present, but the gold tests at 18ct. The hidden watch key inside the shaft is base metal.
