An exquisitely made antique Victorian era (1837-1901) spinner fob pendant in 18ct yellow gold. The fob has two faces, both set with an oval hardstone plaque, one bloodstone and the other agate or dark red carnelian. One of the plaques is intricately carved with an intaglio bearing a Latin motto, a fox, and a sheaf of wheat. The motto reads 'fide et clementia' ('faith and mercy'), while the wheat sheaf was a popular motif in Victorian memento mori jewellery, symbolising life cut short and renewal or resurrection of the soul. The fob rotates fully and freely in its frame to show both faces, and has a bale for wear as a pendant.
Stamped for 18ct gold. Partial maker's mark 'D&...'.

Condition: Very good, with wear commensurate with age. The intaglio is in excellent condition; crisply engraved with no chips and only light abrasion. The gold frame to the intaglio has some bumps and marks. The fob spins freely. Please see pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask questions.
