A rare and highly collectible posy ring dating to the Georgian era (1714-1836). Posy (or poesy) rings derive their name from the old French 'poesie' meaning 'the art of poetry'. They are named for the inscriptions on their bands which convey messages of love, devotion, friendship, and loyalty. Posy rings were worn by both men and women throughout the Middle Ages through to the end of the 18th Century.

This stunning posy ring is in exceptional condition for its 300-odd years of age. The engraving is crisp and clear, and depicts a pair of clasped hands held in a raised bezel. The rear of the band is inscribed with the French motto 'in buen espuer' ('in good hope'). Taken together, these tokens represent a wish for a good future, whether that be in love, marriage or friendship. The ring's shoulders have a beautifully detailed foliate design to a D-shaped band.

This incredibly rare and remarkably preserved ring would make a prized addition to any collection.

Stamped with a pellet cross and the maker's mark 'TC' inside a crown.

Size M (US 6.5). Resizing not recommended as it will cause losses to the design.

Weight (approximate): 8.0g

Measurements (approximate): Band is 9mm at the widest point, tapering to 7mm at the rear. Bezel measures 11mm x 9mm.

Condition: Good, with wear commensurate with age. The engraving is in excellent condition with minimal rubbing. The silver has general light marks and wear. Please see pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask questions.

Cost includes postage and full insurance coverage for loss or damage in transit.
