A rare and unusual vintage poison ring in 9ct yellow gold. The face of the ring features a shield-shaped family crest design of alternating crosses and stripes, and shoulders with floral engraving. The ring's face opens on a hinge to reveal a small secret compartment within, and closes tightly with a catch. Rings of this type are commonly known as 'poison rings' after the design became popular in the Middle Ages as a method to kill one's enemies, or oneself in an act of suicide. They were also used to hold perfume, talismans, keepsakes and other special items.
Fully stamped for 9ct gold, London, 1978. Maker's mark 'MSD'.
Size P (US 8). Can be resized within reason.

Condition: Excellent, with minimal wear commensurate with age. The hinge and catch function well. The gold has very light marks and general wear. The stamps are crisp and clear. Please see pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask questions.
